[iPhone] My Top 5 All Time Favorite iPhone Apps

Apple revolutionized the mobile application market when it launched their App Store July of 2008. Since then, the store has been flooded with useless and mediocre apps which slipped through the cracks, developed in hopes of scoring a quick buck. I’d like to start helping readers with iPhone app posts from time to time, in order to introduce great gems from the store.

Here is my list of the 5 apps which I NEVER uninstall:

  1. Beejive IM ($14.99) – From Blackberry fame, Beejive has come out with a version for the iPhone. This app is so nicely done- a long list of services supported, different sound schemes, wallpapers, IM alerts to email (real time server notifications coming with iPhone 3.0 update), ability to send images, and more. It supports AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, MySpace IM, Yahoo IM, and Facebook IM. I love being able to change my buddy icon straight from the phone, with images in my iPhone photo albums. Pricey yes, but you definitely get what you pay for!
  2. Todo by Appigo ($9.99) – The iPhone is missing a very important feature which smartphones should never miss! – a synchronizable Todo app. The App Store is full of Todo solutions, but none of them had hit the spot for me, until I discovered Appigo Todo. This app not only presents a straight forward interface, but also allows you to sync to 3 online todo services: AppiagoSync, Remember the Milk, and Toodledo.  Adding tasks is fast and easy, and allows you to assign contexts to the tasks such as work, home, finance, or anything else you choose. If todo applications are important to you, go with this one!
  3. Feeds (.99c) – RSS is another common utility the iPhone is missing. Luckily, we have some great options in the App Store. The one that stands out for me is Feeds. It is frequently updated, very smooth, and includes the ability to sign into Google Reader natively from the Feeds app. Another feature that won me over was that I can discover new feeds, instead of just add feeds that I already know about. This is a steal at 99 cents!
  4. Shovel (Free) – Browse Digg.com o your iPhone. This app is amazing! It isn’t just another glorified web app like the others. It features a very rich and well designed interface that makes it a breeze to navigate through. If you’re a fan of Digg, there are no excuses not to get this free app!
  5. Shazam (Free) – This app is simply awesome! I’m a music nut, my ears are always open to new music. I’ll be out and about with my day when I’ll hear a tune I really like- all I have to do is launch this app, let it listen to the tune for a few seconds, and provide me with all the info on the song, including iTunes and YouTube links for it. Just brilliant!

[iPhone] iPhone 3g 2009 Pics (Rumored)

100_1601This is hideous, and hopefully (more like most-likely) a rumor. The new iPhone is rumored to have a rubberized back, which I am very happy about. It does a great job of taking the impact from drops, and also preventing scratches. Scratches are inevitable with the iPhone 3G. Sure it was nice and pretty, but the glossy surface was very hard to maintain. Even cases would scratch it up real fast.

What I don’t like about the rumored design is the glowing Apple logo in the back- kind of like the Macbooks have. This is not only cheesy, but also very bad for the battery life. I have a hard time believing Apple would go with that design. As the WWDC conference is quickly approaching (June 9th, 2009), we will have to wait and see what Apple has in store for us.

fido-leak-16aAnother big rumor going around is that Apple will offer  4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB versions of the new iPhone at launch. As you can see from the picture on the left, a leaked internal presentation from Fido Canada, shows an upcoming 4GB model at $99- and what else? “Video Calling (iChat)”

If this is a reality, it is big news! Although Apple may be forced to lock the feature from 3G signal, so it may be Wi-Fi only like iTunes downloads.  Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

[iPhone] Turn your iPhone Into a Police Scanner

Did you know that you can turn your iPhone into one of those $400 police scanners using a free app? I’ll show you how- let’s go!

  1. From the Apple App Store, download FStream (free app, click icon) http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=6&url=http%3A%2F%2Fphobos.apple.com%2FWebObjects%2FMZStore.woa%2Fwa%2FviewSoftware%3Fid%3D289892007%26mt%3D8&ei=VTQgSqrHEYS8tgOJj5yZBA&usg=AFQjCNGDfHOHx2el2b2KpGUCTjQ65E5_mw&sig2=1Nl66m0r68hYdupADPTkmA
  2. From your computer go to http://www.scanamerica.us/index.php, and choose your State, and City (dark blue cities only supported )
  3. You will see a list of streams towards the right, click on any of them, and your default media player should start streaming them (Windows Media Player for Windows users).
    scanner
  4. When the audio starts streaming on your PC- right click the stream in the playlist, and choose “Properties”- you should see a feed address such as ‘ http://icecast3.scanamerica.us/ca_lapd1 ‘ (for Windows Media Player, other players may work different, you need to try to find the feed address).
  5. Load Fstream on your iPhone, go to favorites, edit, add new webradio- enter anything you want for “Name”, for the “URL” enter the feed address. You don’t need to touch anything for format and bitrate.
  6. Go to more, enable cellular network.
  7. Now for the fun, go to “Play” and tap on the “Favorite” you just created. It will buffer and start streaming the police chatter.

Enjoy ;)

[iPhone] Cydia Too Slow? How to Install Icy!

Let’s be honest, launching Cydia feels like a chore at times. Especially when you are on a slow connection like EDGE. You have to wait for it to update its sources, and pull all the new data until you can use it at decent speed.
Luckily, the RipDev has released the lightweight, and speedy alternative called ICY. I will go through the steps of installing it.

  3. Add the following source (tap “Edit”, then “Add”): http://apt.ripdev.com

  5. Then from the list of packages, tap on “Icy”.

How to Download a Torrent

“How do I download a torrent?” This is a question that gets asked quite frequently- Torrents are the new form of P2P downloading these days. It is the new Napster, and just like Napster- you need to be careful with what you download. A lot of the files that are available through torrents are copyrighted, such as music, movies, and applications, so you are responsible for what you choose to download. Let’s get started shall we..

Step 1:

Download the Torrent client-

The best for Windows is: uTorrent
The best for Mac is: Transmission
The best for Ubuntu is: Transmission (search for it under Applications > Add/Remove)

Step 2:

Once installed, we look for a torrent-

Go http://www.thepiratebay.com (you have probably heard of these guys)

-We are going to search for “Ubuntu”, and specify the search by check-marking “Applications” below the search bar.
tpbhome

-You will be presented with the results of your search. Here is the important part- you need to know how to pick the torrents. These files are not hosted on 1 central server. They are spread out across a whole network of torrent users.

We need to pay close attention to “SE” (seeders), and “LE” (leechers). SE is the number of people hosting the file, LE is the number of people downloading the file.

- Click “SE” to sort by the highest number of seeders.
tpgbseeds

A good ratio of seeders, and leechers is one that has far more SE’s than LE’s. In my example, I found a copy of Ubuntu 9.04 with 98 SE’s, and 9 LE’s. We like this ratio- this means that the download will be pretty fast.
tpbratio

Step 3:

So we decided to go with the torrent mentioned above. Click the file name, and you will be taken to download page.
tpbdl

Click “Download This Torrent” > save the torrent file to your desktop.

Step 4:

Fire up the torrent client you downloaded during step 1.
utorrent1

Go to File > Open > and browse for the torrent file on your desktop (in uTorrent it will be called ‘Add Torrent’ and not ‘Open’)

This will start your download- once it is at 100%, go to the directory you downloaded the file to (you can find this under the program’s preferences menu), and move the file wherever you want.
utorrstart

Done!

First Post – How to Jailbreak your iPhone Firmware 2.2.1

This is my first post- welcome to my blog! I chose this guide as my first post since I am an iPhone enthusiast, and frequently get asked this question everywhere I go.

** This WILL void your warranty with Apple** Good news is, you can just restore it through iTunes if ever you need to take it in to the Apple Store for support- so, no worries!

*First things first, make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes [8.0.2] installed*

Things you will need:

Step 1:
Create a folder on your desktop, and call it “Pwnage” > add QuickPWN and the Firmware 2.2.1 file into that folder.

Step 2:
Unzip the QuickPwn file into the Pwnage folder.

Step 3:
Launch iTunes, and connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable

Step 4:
Select your iPhone from the list on the left side. > hold down shift (*Option key for Mac*) and click the Restore button.

Step 5:
Navigate to the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop > select the 2.2.1 firmware ipsw file > double click the ipsw file or select it and click the Open button to proceed.

Step 6:
Once iTunes is finished upgrading your iPhone to 2.1 > launch QuickPwn 2.1 from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop.

Step 7:
Make sure your iPhone is still connected to iTunes via USB > click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step 8:

Click the Browse button to locate your iPhone firmware ipsw file > click “Open” button.

Step 9:
QuickPwn will verify the ipsw file > after completion of the verification, click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step 10:
You can now select whether to Add Cydia, Add Installer, or Replace Boot Logos. Select the ones you would like to perform then click the clue arrow button (Cydia is highly recommended).

Step 11:
QuickPwn will now ask you to confirm your iPhone 3G is connected via USB cable > verify and click the blue arrow button to proceed.

Step 12:
QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode > once it’s in recovery mode you will be prompted to:

-Hold the Home button for 5 seconds
-Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds
-Release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

Step 13:
Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone 3G in DFU mode it will begin the jailbreaking process.

Step 14:
Once jailbreaking is complete QuickPwn will inform you that it was successful.
