[iPhone] iPhone OS 3.0.1 is Jailbreakable from the getgo

You may have heard that Apple quickly released a patch for the iPhone SMS security hole last week. The update does break your jailbreak. However, you don’t have to wait for the Dev-team to cook up a new version of redsn0w for this one.

iPhone update 3.0.1 is already hackable using the current version of redsn0w.

Just update the phone to 3.0.1 > plug it into your computer > launch redsn0w, and when it asks for the .IPSW file– browse for your old 3.0 .IPSW and you’re good to go.

You can follow my guide on jailbreaking 3.0 here.

I have done this on my 3G S, and have been very successful.

[Apple] Apple Tablet PC is on the way

Apple, the king of computer secrecy, is not so secretive with this little project. By little, I mean BIG. The long rumored Mac Tablet is said to be in effect, and is pending announcement in September.

(Concept art- not  real)

Apple has denied working on a netbook many times- but in no way does this mean that they are ruling out a kick-ass tablet. Will it run Mac OS, or iPhone OS? We will have to wait an see.

According to 9to5mac, the new Apple Tablet device may have already been previewed by an un-named analyst who predicts an announcement in September.

The un-named analyst has also suggested that the Tablet device will be shipped in November, for a price of around $700-$800.

[iPhone] How to Sync your iPhone on Two Computers

If you’re like me, you’d love to be able to sync your iPhone both at work and home. But, with the current iTunes setup, this is not possible. It’s one or the other– but there’s a way. Learn how you can setup your iPhone to sync on two different computers without losing all your settings.

iphone sync image

**IMPORTANT: This method is for syncing music and media on one PC and your calendar, contacts etc on another.**

  1. Step 1

First you need to have your iPhone already synced with one of your computers. This will be Computer A for the rest of this article.

  2. Step 2

Now on Computer A, you will want to find the “iTunes Music Library.xml” file. For MAC users this file is found at “/Users/[your username]/Music” for Windows XP and older it may be found at “\Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\” and for Vista users it will be found at “\Users\[your username]\Music\” Open it with notepad or some basic word processor.

  3. Step 3

Once you have opened this file in a word processor, look for the tag “string” after “Library Persistent ID,” in between those tags is an alpha numeric code you need, it should be 16 characters long. Take this code and copy it somewhere or write it down so that you can use it again later on the other computer.

  4. Step 4

Now go to Computer B, the one you would like to sync your iPhone with as well, and make sure iTunes is closed.

  5. Step 5

Now locate the “iTunes Music Library.xml” file on Computer B as well. Refer to step 2 for assistance with this. Once you find the file, create a backup of it, one easy way to do this is to copy and paste it in the same folder. The computer will create a copy of the file with a slightly different name.

  6. Step 6

Now open this document with a word processor and repeat Step 3 by locating the code and copying it to a safe location as you will need it for step 8. Now replace the code with the one you copied from Computer A in Step 3. Go to File>Save then close the document.

  7. Step 7

Install a hex editor if you don’t have one already, I recommend Tiny Hexer, which there is a link for at the bottom of this article.

  8. Step 8

Locate the file “iTunes Music Library.itl” with your hex editor. Once this is open, go to Edit>Find and Replace. In the find field, enter the code from COMPUTER B, you should have copied this code somewhere during Step 6. Hit FIND and it should come up with 1 result, now hit the REPLACE button and enter the code from COMPUTER A that you got in Step 3 then hit REPLACE again. Now go to File Save and close.

  9. Step 9

You are now down. It is best to setup each PC to sync something different, this setup is perfect for syncing music from one PC such as your home one and Email, calendar, contacts etc from your work PC. If you try to sync up music from both PCs then the music library must be the same on both PCs or your library on your iPhone will get changed every time you sync.

Blackberry Desktop Manager for Mac

RIM has finally decided to update its desktop management suite for the Mac. Wise move on their part– although, they obviously should have done this much sooner. I remember being a Mac + Blackberry owner, and having to rely on “The Missing Sync” software to sync on the Macbook. This is great news for you BB + Mac owners.

[Mac] Mac OS X Startup Keys

bootup-smallThe boot process on a Mac is very clean, and elegant. You just see a gray screen while the dirty work is happening in the background. Some may wonder what they can do to troubleshoot issues on the Mac in case they can’t boot up– that is why I am posting the most useful startup keys you can press to start troubleshooting.

During boot if you press:

C You start from a bootable CD such as your install DVD in the drive.

D Perform an Apple Hard ware test if you have your install DVD in the drive.

N Boot from a network compatible server. Only useful if you have the server.

T Start up in Target Disk mode. You can usually connect to another Mac through Firewire and do lots of funky things. Gone out of fashion and not used as much.

Option Start up using the Start Up Manager. Here you can pick which drive you want to boot from. Known to people who use BootCamp. You can also boot from a CD which is the same as press C.

Option then N Similar to the item above, except you get given the choice of booting from a network disk.

Option + N Boot from the first network boot image.

Command + V Boot up in Verbose mode, where you see lots of text whizzing by which is not a lot of use to you. It will also show Verbose output on shut down.

Command + S Single User Mode. This is where you can run a lot of high level tasks as a single user. Probably not for newbies. You could probably break your computer very quickly in Single User mode.

Shift Start up in safe mode. Very useful if you have a problem and need an environment where you don’t want unnecessary things loaded. A good bet if you get Kernel panics during boot.

Option + Command + P + R Reset NVRAM. Although you will probably never need to reset this RAM it contents some useful stuff that can become corrupted. If you are having really bad problems this may be a good lead to follow. More information on Apple’s website.

Hold Eject or F12 or Mouse Eject anything that is in the disk drive.

If you have any more please leave a comment below.

Microsoft Store — Coming near an Apple Store near you

microsoftstore
Microsoft is openly acknowledging Apple’s consumer electronics threat and making a move against it. The company’s COO Kevin Turner has announced that they will open their Microsoft Store, right next door to Apple this fall:

“And stay tuned, because we’re going to have some retail stores opened up that are opened up right next door to Apple stores this fall. Stay tuned, just stay tuned.” – Microsoft COO, Kevin Turner

He said it today at the Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference keynote.

Apple’s success in the retail market—which has helped the Cupertino company to win the mindshare battle, has come down heavy on M$—Microsoft wants to fight back doing the same thing—sounds familiar?—and showing whatever cool things they want to show.

I’m going to be the first to guess that it will look like a class-less Radio Shack (sorry).

[iPhone] How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.0

Wow, am I late with this post or what!? Sorry guys, this one totally flew over my head since I posted a guide on jailbreaking firmware 2.2.1 a couple months back. Just follow these easy steps, and you’ll be free from the Apple shackles in no time.

1. Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone.

2. Create a new folder on your desktop. In this folder, download RedSn0w as well as the latest 3.0 firmware for your iPhone from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware).

3. Unzip and launch RedSn0w.

4. Click “browse” and select the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in a folder in step 2.

5. Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.

6. Select “install Cydia” and click “next”.

7. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that it is off. Click “next”.

8. RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.

9. If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient.

10. Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”

11. Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.

12. Congratulations, you just jailbroke your iPhone 3.0 with RedSn0w. Cydia should now be on your springboard
