[Windows] Keep your PC awake during presentations, movies, etc with Caffeine

caffeine_logoWe’ve all watched a movie, or given a presentation on our computers, only to get annoyed by the screen saver kicking in. I know you can just change your power settings, and have your computer set to stay on, but no body really wants that configuration full time. It can cause image burn-in, and even increase your electric bill.  If you share this peeve of mine, then Caffeine is for you! It sits in your task bar, and keeps your PC awake by sending a simulated key-press signals every 59 seconds (configurable to time setting of your choice). The best part is, you can launch it when you need it- very quick.

caffeine_ss

Caffeine is totally free, and lite (only 13 KB). Just make sure you set the key-stroke time earlier than the time set for your screen-saver to initiate.

[Firefox] Get Your Favorite Add-ons Working in Firefox 3.5

A common drawback in updating Firefox is losing the compatibility of your favorite add-ons. This guide will show you how to configure Firefox to allow those add-ons to run.

Note: Changing these settings can cause trouble, so try it at your own risk.

:(

Here is a trick to get them back to work, which will help you greatly as you upgrade to Firefox 3.5 :

  • Open about:config. To open it simple type about:config in the address bar.
  • Accept the warranty condition.

firefox warranty

  • Create a new boolean entry. To create, make a right click anywhere and select New > Boolean.

  • Name this entry as : extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false.

And, you are done! Now, add-ons will work irrespective of their compatibility with the version of Firefox.

Thanks Arpitext

[iPhone] How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.0

Wow, am I late with this post or what!? Sorry guys, this one totally flew over my head since I posted a guide on jailbreaking firmware 2.2.1 a couple months back. Just follow these easy steps, and you’ll be free from the Apple shackles in no time.

1. Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone.

2. Create a new folder on your desktop. In this folder, download RedSn0w as well as the latest 3.0 firmware for your iPhone from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware).

3. Unzip and launch RedSn0w.

4. Click “browse” and select the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in a folder in step 2.

5. Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.

6. Select “install Cydia” and click “next”.

7. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that it is off. Click “next”.

8. RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.

9. If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient.

10. Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”

11. Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.

12. Congratulations, you just jailbroke your iPhone 3.0 with RedSn0w. Cydia should now be on your springboard

HTML5 Cheat Sheet PDF Download

XHTML is dead, long live HTML 5! According to W3C News Archive, XHTML 2 working group is expected to stop work end of 2009 and W3C is planning to increase resources on HTML 5 instead. And even although HTML 5 won’t be completely supported until 2022, it doesn’t mean that it won’t be widely adopted within the foreseeable future.

So in the spirit of the upcoming change we decided to release a handy printable HTML 5 Cheat Sheet that lists all currently supported tags, their descriptions, their attributes and their support in HTML 4.

Please notice that the specification is an ongoing work, and is expected to remain so for many years, although parts of HTML 5 are going to be finished and implemented in browsers before the whole specification reaches final Recommendation status. We’ll do our best to update the cheat sheet when new changes will become known. The cheat sheet was created by our friends from Veign.com and released exclusively for the readers of Smashing Magazine. – [thanks SmashingMagazine]

  40. Yahoo! Mail Notifier – This extension notifies you when new messages arrive in your Yahoo mailbox.
  41. Flashblock - The plugin blocks flash from running. It acts on all sites by default, but lets you set ‘whitelists’ of sites that can use flash, such as youtube. For blocked sites (those not on the whitelise) you get a window of the right size on the screen, and a ‘play’ button you can click if you want to load the animation. Here is an opera version.
  42. Fasterfox - A bunch of tweaks to speed up firefox simply without manually tuning the registry parameters. Can be set to exceed the RFC specs if you want. Also provides a page load timer in the bottom right which is I like. See how much of a change you get after installing flashblock
  43. Autocomplete Manager – When you type into the default firefox location bar, you get ‘autocomplete’ suggestions based on the part of the URL you typed. This plugin enhances that so it automatically searches on bookmarks, and even web page titles from your history. If you keep a long enough history, it could almost render your bookmarks obsolete.
  44. Firebug – Essential for anyone who does web development. Install it, then for a page you want to analyze click Tools/Firebug. Click ‘inspect’ and point your mouse at any part of a web page and it’ll show a breakdown of the HTML in that section only, and let you modify the source ‘live’ to test fixes. Great for showing how web pages are composed, and it’s a much nicer alternative to a full ‘view page source’ option. Firebug and the inspect facility can be added as icons to your toolbar, so it doesn’t clutter up your browser out of the box. There is also a YSlow plugin that you can add after installing firebug to perform performance analysis on web pages.
  45. FoxEar – Essential internal tool that gives you a sidebar to interface into DogEar.
  46. Fast Video DownloadIt downloads videos from YouTube. You get an icon in the bottom right that you click when you’re on a page with embedded video, and it lets you save it.
  47. Remove It Permanently - (RIP) RIP lets you right click on any section of a web page (Such as a sidebar or advert) and specify that it’s removed from all futuring rendering of the page. By using this carefully you can reclaim a lot of your browser screen area.
  48. PDF Download – helps download the PDF documents
  49. Down Them All! - a download manager for resume / split into parts / etc
  50. Foxsaver – A screensaver for your Firefox.

If you know of more that should be on this list, please mention it in the comments section below!
