R.I.P Michael

t1wide.jackson

I know this isn’t really a topic we cover on this site- but I just wanted to post about the passing of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson, the show-stopping singer whose best-selling albums including “Off the Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad” — and electrifying stage presence made him one of the most popular artists of all time, died Thursday, June 25, 2009. His death was caused by cardiac arrest- he was rushed to the UCLA hospital this afternoon. He had a tour and album planned for July, which I was looking forward to hearing. Rest in peach M.J- your music will live on in our hearts forever.

Windows 7 Pricing Details

Details are in on the Windows 7 pricing structure Microsoft will use during launch. Microsoft released the box art and the Windows 7 flavors you can choose from last week.

The options Windows 7 will comes in is:

Windows 7 Starter pricing N/A- For developing markets, and an option for netbooks.

Windows 7 Home Basic pricing N/A- For developing markets

Windows 7 Home Premium $120 for upgrade; $200 for full version - it’s great that they are starting off with Home Premium, and not sticking in a “Basic” version lijke they did in Vista.

Windows 7 Professional $200 for upgrade; $300 for full versionI’m assuming the pro edition will include Terminal Services, and Remote Desktop (RDP) functionality like it did in XP.

Windows 7 Ultimate $220 for upgrade; $320 for full versionthe ultimate version of Windows. Basically, the Enterprise version that regular people can buy. It has BitLocker, notably, and a few other advanced features. It seems like visibility of this will be low, outside of a few “special promotions” from vendors occasionally, to minimize confusion.

Half price pre-order deal:

People in the US, Canada or Japan who already own a PC running XP or Vista will be able to pre-order the upgrade disc for half the price of what it will retail for. The pre-order deal  starts Friday, June 26th, and will run for a limited time.

The Deals:

Windows 7 Home Premium, usually $120, will cost $50, and Windows 7 Professional, usually $200, will cost $100. Windows 7 Ultimate is not part of this discount plan, but it might get its own incentive plan later on.

If you buy a PC starting Friday, June 26th, you should be covered under a FREE upgrade plan. So you can buy that Vista laptop, or desktop over the weekend, and should be able to get a free Windows 7 upgrade once it is available.

The Windows 7 release date is October 22, 2009.

[Windows] Manage your Desktop Real Estate using WinSplit

WinSplit is a light weight utility that you can use to easily organize your active windows by tiling, resizing and positioning them to better utilize your desktop real estate.

As you can see in the screenshots below, the advantages of using WinSplit is that it saves you from having to drag and drop windows by allowing you to snap windows into specific tiled configurations using simple keyboard hotkeys.

I use this app many times a day for work, and it’s worth a try- it’s free.

[iPhone] Enable Tethering on your iPhone 3G and 3GS using only Safari (no jailbreak needed)

This hack is EXTREMELY easy! By visiting a site on your iPhone’s Safari, you can enable tethering on your iPhone. Tethering allows you to utilize your iPhone’s data connection to use on your laptop or desktop- just like a broadband card.

Here’s how:

  • Go to http://help.benm.at/help.php from Safari
  • Scroll down to Tethering & Internet Settings
  • Choose your country and provider(works for AT&T and T-Mobile)
  • It will then allow you to install the appropriate configuration
  • Then go to Settings and enable the tethering function

If this disables visual voicemail on your phone, just go and reset your network settings, and it should be fixed. If that doesn’t work, try updating your phone with an older version of the AT&T carrier settings.

**I take no responsibility if ATT or any other carrier charges you at the end of month**

People have been able to use this feature without getting charged.

Here’s a video to help you through the process:

Alternatives to Adobe Software…which are FREE!

Adobe is the standard in the digital design, and illustration industry. They are also moving into the audio and video sector with Adobe Premiere, and Soundbooth. One problem, they are very expensive. A struggling artist will have a lot of trouble affording it- luckily there are some great alternatives out there for free. Here are my favorites:

Photoshop Alternatives:

Gimp

gimp

Gimp is a very popular alternative to Photoshop. It has a very different interface when compared to Photoshop, but is able to perform pretty much the same tasks. It is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows. http://www.gimp.org/
