[Firefox] Don’t Bookmark, Just ‘Read It Later’!

We’ve all bookmarked an interesting site while surfing around. But, we usually forget to go back to the bookmark, and end up cluttering our Bookmarks with sites we’ve forgotten about.  Now there is a nifty little app available by the name of “Read It Later”.

It’s a Firefox add-on that provides users with a solution to the issue of forgotten bookmarking. Once you install it, just right click on a cool website, and select “Read this Page Later”. The page will be saved to the app, which will prepare a queue of sites you can come back to when you have a chance. All you have to do is click on the top-corner of Firefox, where it says “Read it Later”. Once done reading, just check it off!

The current version (0.9945) includes offline reading, synchronization of reading list between multiple computers, and more.

[Throwback] Windows 98 Boot Disk

This is an oldie, and still sought after- so I decided to post it. I do try to satisfy every possible geek-need, and apparently there is still a community for Windows 98.

This boot disk image allows you to re-install Windows 98 (still need a Win 98 setup CD), or boot into a Win98 installation that has become corrupted.

Just save the EXE to your Desktop, drive C, or anywhere you’d like > insert a floppy disk into drive A, and run it. This will write the image to the floppy, allowing you to use it as a boot disk by restarting your machine with the floppy inserted.

Download for: Windows 98, or Windows 98 SE

Find and Remove Duplicate Files with Duplicate File Searcher

If you’ve been using your computer for a long period of time without re-formatting it, you have probably built up duplicate files due to copying and moving all over the place.

In my case, it is a large number of media files such as videos, music, and images. I may lose track, and copy the sames file more than once to any given directory. Windows does not provide you with a  duplicate file checking solution, but there is freeware that does the trick.

Duplicate Files Searcher checks and removes duplicate files. It is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. You can preview files before deleting, or set DFS to automatically delete duplicate files.

Features:

  • Searching results can be saved and loaded in future
  • Checks any files, folders and drives
  • Works with removable drives
  • Decide on automatic deletion or preview
  • Works on all OSes

Download here – requires Java Runtime Environment, so please install JRE first if you haven’t already

[Security] Anonymous Torrent Downloads with Anomos

Anomos is a free torrent client that lets you share files anonymously. It is currently in beta, but works like a charm.  It’s a very plain BitTorrent client –which doesn’t even show the number of seeds & peers. Only the tracker will know who’s downloading what.

Now that’s what I call an anonymous torrent client, and Anomos does it well.

Anomos is currently available for Windows and Linux – Download it here.

[Windows] Smart Installer Pack – Install all of your Favorite Applications at Once after a Reformat

Every Windows user goes through this some time; a damaged operating system caused by a virus, bad update, data loss, or just an overall laggy system. Sometimes the best thing to do is to re-format Windows, and install from scratch.

This can get very tedious- backing up gigs of data, reinstalling Windows, downloading and installing all the hardware drivers, restoring backed up data, AND going through all the websites to download your must have software (I made a list of all the software I reinstall every time here).

Luckily, there is a handy little utility called “Smart Installer Pack (more…)

[iPhone] iPhone OS Running on Big Screen Mac Pro

Dreamfield.se (CruchGear) has hacked iPhone OS 2 to run on a multi-touch monitor of a Mac Pro. I’m not sure if this is real or not, but that looks awesome. Hey, it’s no iTablet, but it’s getting there. Hope this is legit- enjoy!

[Windows] Add the Vista Sidebar to Windows XP

If you’ve decided to stay clear of Vista and stick with XP, you might like this. You can install the handy sidebar offered in Vista, right on your Windows XP desktop. This is the actual Vista Sidebar ported to XP by Joshoon over at Deviant Art. Users can grab additional sidebar gadgets directly from Microsoft, and experience the same functionality as they would with the sidebar on a Vista system. The Windows Vista Sidebar pack is free, Windows XP only.

For more sidebar applications and nice Vista features, check out how to get the best features of Vista in XP.
