[Windows] Unlocker, an Essential Windows Utility

We’ve all had this happen to us. Trying to move, or delete a file in Windows, only to find out it is locked by another process. It’s both annoying, and tedious. You are forced to look for the process that has locked the file, and kill it.

This is where Unlocker comes in. I install this little application every time I restore my computer. It makes it so simple to free up a file- all you have to do is right click on the said file, and click “Unlocker”.

[Windows XP] 25 Hidden Programs in Windows XP

Windows XP is full of applications you won’t find in the Start menu. These applications/utilities perform a handful of very useful tasks- here is a list with descriptions.

To run these programs, go to Start > Run, and type in the executable name- for example: mplay32.exe

1. Character Map = charmap.exe (very useful for finding unusual characters)

2. Disk Cleanup = cleanmgr.exe

3. Clipboard Viewer = clipbrd.exe (views contents of Windows clipboard)

4. Dr Watson = drwtsn32.exe (Troubleshooting tool)

[iPhone] Turn your iPhone Into a Police Scanner

Did you know that you can turn your iPhone into one of those $400 police scanners using a free app? I’ll show you how- let’s go!

  1. From the Apple App Store, download FStream (free app, click icon) http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=6&url=http%3A%2F%2Fphobos.apple.com%2FWebObjects%2FMZStore.woa%2Fwa%2FviewSoftware%3Fid%3D289892007%26mt%3D8&ei=VTQgSqrHEYS8tgOJj5yZBA&usg=AFQjCNGDfHOHx2el2b2KpGUCTjQ65E5_mw&sig2=1Nl66m0r68hYdupADPTkmA
  2. From your computer go to http://www.scanamerica.us/index.php, and choose your State, and City (dark blue cities only supported )
  3. You will see a list of streams towards the right, click on any of them, and your default media player should start streaming them (Windows Media Player for Windows users).

  4. When the audio starts streaming on your PC- right click the stream in the playlist, and choose “Properties”- you should see a feed address such as ‘ http://icecast3.scanamerica.us/ca_lapd1 ‘ (for Windows Media Player, other players may work different, you need to try to find the feed address).
  5. Load Fstream on your iPhone, go to favorites, edit, add new webradio- enter anything you want for “Name”, for the “URL” enter the feed address. You don’t need to touch anything for format and bitrate.
  6. Go to more, enable cellular network.
  7. Now for the fun, go to “Play” and tap on the “Favorite” you just created. It will buffer and start streaming the police chatter.

Enjoy ;)

[iPhone] Cydia Too Slow? How to Install Icy!

Let’s be honest, launching Cydia feels like a chore at times. Especially when you are on a slow connection like EDGE. You have to wait for it to update its sources, and pull all the new data until you can use it at decent speed.
Luckily, the RipDev has released the lightweight, and speedy alternative called ICY. I will go through the steps of installing it.

[Windows] Blue Screen of Death Code Meanings

When Windows XP detects a problem from which it cannot recover, it displays Stop messages. These are text-mode error messages that report information about the condition.

Stop messages, sometimes referred to as blue screens (BSoD), contain specific information that can help you diagnose and possibly resolve the problem detected by the Windows kernel.

This list describes these messages and helps you understand and interpret them.

This list is NOT exhaustive or meant to resolve EVERY error.
This list of messages is a guide to individual messages and their possible causes and resolutions… Having a basic understanding of these error messages enables you to communicate with your technical support professional more effectively too.

With all these Stop messages, you can pretty much assume someone else has encountered the problem before you. That is why tying in the error message into www.google.com , posting a notice for help on a relevant newsgroup and entering the stop code into the “Microsoft Knowledge Base” can yield help just when you need it!

How to Download a Torrent

“How do I download a torrent?” This is a question that gets asked quite frequently- Torrents are the new form of P2P downloading these days. It is the new Napster, and just like Napster- you need to be careful with what you download. A lot of the files that are available through torrents are copyrighted, such as music, movies, and applications, so you are responsible for what you choose to download. Let’s get started shall we..

[Ubuntu] Gnome-Do | Your New Best Friend

gnome-do

If you’ve ever used Quicksilver for the Mac, then you know what I’m talking about. Gnome-do allows you to simply type the name of the application or file that you want to open, and just hit Enter to launch it. A lot of us Linux users used to do this with the Terminal, I know- but this is so much faster. It’s incredible how intuitive it is.

One of the best parts of Gnome-do is how it learns from your previous queries. Let’s say you constantly launch Firefox from it- after a while, it knows to display Firefox first, right when you type ‘F’.

You can easily install Gnome-do by going to:  Applications > Add/Remove > search: Gnome-do.
