My Belated Review of the iPad- It’s No “Big iPhone”

computerboss_ipad_review

Will it kill the netbook? Will it be replacing your main computer? Who knows?!

The iPad is said to be a “new category” by Apple. It goes a little something like this;

iPhone (or other Smartphone) -> iPad -> Laptop/Desktop.

How you use it, and what you use it for is entirely up to you. I myself see this as a new way to consume media. Think of it as Books, Magazines, Movies, Web, and more, right at your finger-tips (pun intended). It outperforms previous tablet computers with its snappy execution, and elegance. Say what you will about its lack of USB, Flash, or SD slot; when it comes down to it, this device does what it does, VERY well.

[iPhone] iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4 – First Impressions

Wow, just realized that I’ve been doing a lot of Apple posts lately. Oh well, it’s Apple season…

Recently, I was able to get the UDID on my 3G S onto an Apple Developer account- allowing me to install the latest iPhone 4.0 Beta on my unit. It is Beta number 4, meaning that it’s getting closer and closer to the Gold Master.

Being the first iPhone beta I’ve tried, I have to say that I am really impressed by the stability of this version. It feels pretty polished, and put-together. There are minor hiccups I’ve noticed, such as a brief lag when I put in my password to unlock the phone. All in all, it’s very functional.

I’ve tried many apps on it and they have been compatible so far. Can’t really test the multi-tasking service in 3rd party apps because developers haven’t implemented it yet, but standard iPhone apps like AppStore, and Mail work great. I’m able to switch back and fourth with ease. I can be surfing in Safari, and get a TXT, go to the Messages app (loads instantly) to reply, and switch right back to Safari. Very quick, and smooth.

There is a welcomed set of new Apple wallpapers added. They are pretty mellow and minimal, since you don’t want anything too loud on the homescreen. Folders are a great addition. I organized my apps into several different categories, and it makes for a more cleaner and clutter-free experience.

There is a tethering option under Settings > General > Network, but clicking on it results in a prompt to contact AT&T. I did not see the Custom Dictionary section that people posted pictures of, I have to look more into it.

UPDATES:
You can now search for SMS messages in Spotlight Search.

There is a search bar at the top of the Messages app, similar to the one Mail got in OS 3.0.

Deleting apps no longer asks you to rate 1 to 5 stars.

Check out some nice screens below:

To download the new iPhone 4.0 wallpaper collection- click here to go the the Gizmodo post.

5 Ways to Use the iPad for Business

Since the iPad’s release in early April, we’ve drooled over its modern, minimal, and sleek design.  It just looked so fun to play with.  However, people since then wondered how they could apply this device into their day-to-day life for getting things done.  Not many were willing to drop at least $500 on a new toy.

[iPad] Run iPhone Apps in High-Res on the iPad (no more pixel-doubling)

If any of you iPad owners ever ran an iPhone app on the device, you probably noticed that it didn’t scale too well. Luckily, Ryan Pertich has developed a Cydia app called FullForce.

This app (controlled in the Settings panel) scales most iPhone apps to the iPad’s native resolution.

I’ve tried Facebook, and Beejive IM and they looked absolutely great! Some apps may not format right, such as 3D games, but this is a must have for JB’d iPad owners, and It’s FREE :)

To download:

Just run Cydia on the iPad and do a search for “Fullforce”. It should be in the default repos.
